How to work out the price per kg

Divide the price by the weight in kilos. If the weight is in grams, divide the price by the grams and multiply by 1,000. For liquids it is the same with litres and millilitres.

Worked examples (made-up prices, only to show the formula)
ProductSumPrice per kg or litre
500 g pack at £2.002.00 ÷ 500 × 1,000£4.00/kg
750 g pack at £2.702.70 ÷ 750 × 1,000£3.60/kg
6 × 1.5 l bottles at £3.603.60 ÷ (6 × 1.5)£0.40/litre

For most products sold by weight or volume, supermarkets in the UK have to show the unit price on the shelf label, usually in small print under the price. If you cannot find it, or you are comparing multipacks or member prices, use the calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out the price per kg of a product?

Divide the price by the grams and multiply by 1,000. For example, £2 for 500 g is 2 ÷ 500 × 1,000 = £4 per kg.

And the price per litre?

The same with millilitres: divide the price by the millilitres and multiply by 1,000. If the size is in litres, just divide the price by the litres.

Is the bigger pack always cheaper?

No. Often it is, but offers and smaller packs can work out cheaper per kg. Check before you buy.
